St. Lucia

St Lucia is a small island stretching 27 miles long (north to south) by 14 miles wide (east to west). During our placements, volunteers will travel across the island’s breathtaking beaches and steep coastlines, through its magnificent rainforest-choked interior and up the iconic twin peaks; ‘Pitons’. In this totally tropical mix of volcanic mountains, lush jungles and blooming orchids, waterfalls and healing sulphur springs, something’s always happening…

Our Location

Based in the north of the island, your accommodation is located perfectly between St. Lucia’s prime tourist and nightlife spot; the Rodney Bay Strip, and the country’s capital Castries. A 5 minute walk down the road is a local supermarket, post office and bus stop. With the nearest beach (East Winds) just a few minutes walk away, it will begin to feel like home in no time!

Our remit to spread our work and projects across the island means your placement will cause you to see all corners of the ‘Helen’ of the West Indies. Conversely you will be afforded enough free time to visit the sites at your own pace.

Sports Coaching

Program Description

This programme is for volunteers interns and aspiring coaches, through our grassroots projects they will use sport as a vehicle for combating prevalent social issues in some of St. Lucia’s most disadvantaged communities. Volunteers will work within schools and communities tackling issues such as gang culture and childhood obesity through sport.

Coaches will work with children (aged 4-12), adolescents (13-17) and senior teams.

Aims & Objectives

The overall aim of our grassroots projects is to equip all children in the region with the means to play and enjoy sport and reap the obvious health and developmental benefits. Our volunteers will achieve this by providing sessions for our grassroot and school of excellence projects, tackling the most prevalent issues facing the region’s youth, while improving sport in the Caribbean holistically.

Volunteers coaching week is Sunday to Thursday. Daily work schedules vary but generally days are either: School session 13:00 – 15:00 then After school sessions 15.15 – 17.00 or After School 15.00 – 16.45 then after work/college seniors 5-7/dark. Evenings and weekends are free time but are filled with lots of options of various social activities and excursions with other volunteers – see activities and events below.

Program participant criteria

Participants must be a minimum of 18 years old, there is no maximum age (we have had 47 year olds before) however any prospective volunteers should be informed that the majority of other participants will be between 18 and 25 years old. No coaching qualifications are required but an ability and understanding of the sport they intend to coach is important as well as a passion and enthusiasm for working with kids.

Additional equipment

Volunteers should bring a whistle and appropriate clothing to coach in (shorts, t-shirt, sports shoes). All required coaching equipment is provided (e.g. balls, cones, bibs) however volunteers are welcome to bring extra equipment for their chosen sport if they wish.

Free Time

We want you to get the most out of your island experience and with the Caribbean on your doorstep we are sure you will realise this at every opportunity you have when you aren’t coaching your elected sports. The program allows you to have days off every Friday and Saturday so you get to make the most of the weekends when the island is inundated by visitors from the other surrounding islands that come to take part is the bustling local markets and sell exotic produce.

It also allows you time to explore the most scenic island within the Caribbean, being based out of Castries, the capital of St.Lucia you get to immerse yourself in Caribbean culture throughout your stay on the island. We suggest getting involved and trying out a traditional Caribbean Curry or getting involved with the monthly Carnivals!

Or… if you’re anything like ourselves, a lot of your free time will be spent soaking up the sun at the stunning beaches the island has on offer!

Which city or town will I be staying in?

The Caribbean is full of tropical islands and you’ll be staying in one of the best islands during your time in St. Lucia; our Camp Caribbean program takes place in St. Lucia’s capital: Castries.

Will I make friends?

All applicants on the Camp Caribbean program will share a mutual interest before Camp has even begun: you’re all passionate about sports and travel. Therefore, we’re 100% confident that you and the Camp participants will find something to talk about!

How old do I need to be to participate?

You’re required to be over 18 by the start date of the program.

Can I apply with a friend?

Yes you can! Let us know who your friend is when you sign up and we will arrange for you to be on the same intake. You can even share a room at the guesthouse!

What happens when I arrive at the airport?

Our Camp Caribbean team will give you a warm calypso welcome when you touch down at the airport, then they’ll transfer you and the other Camp participants to the guesthouse.

Which airport do I fly to?

Hewanorra International Airport (UVF): is St. Lucia’s premier airport and is the destination of all long-haul flights, hence most volunteers will be landing here.

George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU): If you transferring from neighboring islands 10 mins from UTS accommodation. We will pick you up in arrivals at either airport.

Port Castries Flying from Paris to Martinique has been found to be a significantly cheaper alternative to the direct flight to St. Lucia. Daily Ferries from Port Fort-de-France will get you to St. Lucia in 45 mins (approx).

We will pick you up in arrivals. You will be collected on arrival at any of the aforementioned ports, and driven back to the accommodation. Although we can be flexible on request, it is important that you arrive on published arrival dates to help with operational management and induction.

Do I need a visa?

As a UK citizen, you can obtain a VISA upon entry to the country that will last throughout your stay.

Do I need a passport?

Yes, you will need a full passport valid for at least 6 months.

What's my accommodation like?

A large dorm-style guest house with plenty of space (holds 21 max). The house contains seven air-conditioned bedrooms, shared ensuite bathrooms between every two rooms, the large communal area has a flat screen TV with American cable, movie and sport channels for use in downtime.

The kitchen area is equipped with all required utensils and is suitable for multiple people cooking at once. The majority of in-house social activity takes place either in the communal area, the vast recreational space within the compound and the Balcony that looks over it. This space is the notorious heartbeat of the house during gatherings or preparations for nights out.

Is there any Wi-Fi?

Yes there is! No excuse not to upload a cheeky selfie!

Is Camp Caribbean safe?

Absolutely – we have high standards and want to ensure our Camp participants are at as little risk as possible when away with us.

The accommodation is in a gated compound, within a safe and friendly neighborhood. Staff are on site 24 hours with a Security Guard on the gate at night. Bedrooms are lockable ensuring safe storing of valuables. United Through Sport also has a link with a local taxi company to aid volunteers in travelling around safely in their free time.

What should I pack for Camp Caribbean?

You will receive a packing list as part of the ‘Pre-Departure pack’ which you will be sent prior to leaving for Camp, but here’s just a few items we recommend taking;

– Mosquito spray
– Sun cream
– Warm weather clothing
– A padlock
– A camera to capture all your amazing experiences
– You will also want to bring your own towel and washcloth as only bed linens are provided at Camp

Additional information will be provided during your pre-departure orientation meeting at our Manchester HQ.

Should I bring a suitcase or a backpack for Camp Caribbean?

The choice is yours, but a backpack is definitely more suitable for travelling. Plus, you don’t want to look like a starry-eyed first time traveller dragging around a heavy suitcase, looking like you just landed at a 5* resort in Europe!

How much spending money do I need?

We suggest that participants take roughly between £200 – £450 for the two-week stay; by all means, feel free to take more and treat yourself to more souvenirs if you’d like!

Do I need health insurance and vaccinations?

We recommend getting health insurance. Once your place is secured our flight partners can help you get this organised.

There are no compulsory vaccinations for the Caribbean, but we always recommend you visit your local GP 12 weeks ahead of travelling for up to date advice.

Can I travel before or after Camp?

Yes, we offer plenty of post-Camp travel. Being in the Caribbean, you have the opportunity to head south and explore South America or journey north to the United States and Canada. Our in-flight flight team is on hand to help you organize this and can be contacted on +441612223780, or via email at

How much time do I have off?

You are only required to coach Monday – Thursday. This gives you the opportunity to do as you please on evenings, Friday’s and at the weekend.

What is the program orientation that I have to attend?

As part of your program participation, you will be required to attend a compulsory pre-departure orientation meeting held at our head office in Manchester, UK. Its an amazing way to meet the Camp Caribbean Team and get a taste for what a day in our office is like. We will go over everything about Camp and what you can expect so that you are fully prepared for the time of your life.

Under extenuating circumstances, we are able to offer a Skype orientation at a time that suits you. This will be at a cost of £25. Please contact the office for more information.

What clothing should I pack?

During your time in the Caribbean, it’s going to hot and sunny, so t-shirts, shorts and sun-cream are absolutely essential. Remember you will be professionally coaching sports so it’s important to present yourself responsibly when in front of the children. All the sports equipment is provided as well as your Camp Caribbean t-shirt.

What if I have a dietary requirement?

The volunteer house has a kitchen so you will be able to tailor your meals to your needs.

Are there any additional costs?

Flights aren’t included, but our in-flight flight team are on hand to help you organise your ideal route to St. Lucia. They can be contacted on +441612223780, or via email at
